Advocacy Areas

Livelihoods and Economic Empowerment

Programming, principally in terms of advocacy and campaigns, aimed at spotlighting the enhanced vulnerability of Persons-with-Albinism, and including the incubation of Income Generating Projects.

Climate Change and Adaptation

The ecological imbalance, occasioned by unhinged consumerism and capitalism, has despicable consequences for Persons-with-Albinism, always at the back of the line. Connected programing is aimed at structuring resilience in both agricultural value chains, and other poverty-busting processes. Programming is aimed at exciting revised governmental approaches around climate mitigation – especially the up-taking of measures aimed at cushioning the community. The flagship campaign under this pillar ‘Melting Under the Dying Ozone’, intends to build a body of lived stories highlighting the link between the Ozone Depletion and entrenched poverty amongst Persons-with-Albinism.

Sexual Reproductive and Health Rights

The African cultural enterprise is laden with notions of humanness that excludes Persons-with-Albinism. And when left from pertinent communal discourses, engaging with HealthCare Access Points becomes a complicated exercise. Moreover, being defined as sub-human is disempowering – disturbing faith in communal processes. With respect to circumcision, for example, Persons-with-Albinism view it as an elaborate organ harvesting exercise – and do not generally subscribe despite science-backed health benefits. Programming around the SRHR pillar revolves around strengthening pathways that grows the spectrum for Persons-with-Albinism to engage with health facilities.

Social Accountability and Governance

Chapter 14 of the new constitution of Zimbabwe provides for Devolution – where governmental powers have to be exercised at the lowest level as is possible – along with the fact that 5% of the National Budget is expended as prioritized by grassroots agencies. This is an opportunity the ALCOZ, and Persons-with-Albinism exploits by way of capacitating Persons-with-Albinism Change Makers to procedurally engage with the local government value chain, broadening the quantum and quality of albino-focused projects funded through Devolution Funds. Capacitation in terms of their collective abilities around Public Expenditure Tracking models is integrated.

  1. An average 10 Persons-with-Albinism gets cancer screened monthly
  2. Immersive Safe Spaces to tackle rampant sexual violence, including structuring access to SRHR goods.
  3. An average 6 patients are administered radiotherapy, monthly
  1. Over 40 Students-with-Albinism are on ALCOZ scholarship, the majority female.
  2. Over 200 Students-with-Albinism have access to Assistive Devices yearly – spectacles, magnifying lenses.
Overview

The ALCOZ leverages campaign-format advocacy, and with respect to the climate emergency and access to education, they are kids-led. As a strategic initiative, the ALCOZ is tactically integrating Artificial Intelligence, and Technology, broadly, into albino-controlled spaces to improve the scope and scale of youth-led interventions.
